Forgot one thing you have to pick out the tumblers in the lockset in order for the cylinder to turn? Locksmith for over 7 years here

That's right! So if you do have a cheap generic lock then you probably would want to drill it out yourself. But a $10 lock probably won't be that hard to pick/jimmy and someone who's never done it before, a lock that cheap may very well be the first (or only) kind that they manage to open up!

Hey, a locksmith would only do this if the lock is actually broken. If someone simply lost their keys they would just pick/bump the lock, and you'd get a new key. If someone did this themselves over a missing key they'd have to buy a new doorknob!
          @Coasterdude02149 08.06.2018->Umm, a scumbag locksmith charged me $700. to do this six years ago when an asshole tenant locked the keys on the kitchen table after I had him evicted for non-payment of rent. I now have to do this to an attic door. I'll be damned if I'm gonna pay $700 again when I could have done this myself the first time.
